PANERAI was founded by Giovanni Panerai in Florence, Italy in 1860.

By 1900, under the leadership of the founder’s grandson Guido Panerai Officine Panerai had become an official watchmaker supplier to the Italian Royal  Navy, suppling watches and precison instruments.

Panerai watches of this time consisted of cases designed and manufacture by Rolex SA and movements made by Swiss manufacturer Cortébert.  Bewtween 1938 – 1970 PANERAI produced  wrist worn diving instruments  to Italian Marina Militare and Egyptian  Navy (Egiziano 1956).

In 1916 Officine Panerai patents Radiomir, the radium based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sigthing instruments and devices. The first prototype  watch  called today Radiomir appears first in 1936. Two years later Panerai starts the first production of this model.  In 1940 Radiomir gets new lungs that  help to reinforce  the construction of the case and gives the base to today’s well know Radiomir 1940 line.

In 1943 Panerai presented Mare Nostrum that actually had been a prototype of  a two- counter chronograph designed for the deck officers. Unfortunelty it did not go to the production. First in 1993 Panerai released a 42mm edition with PAM006, PAM007 and PAM008 followed years later by PAM300 – nearly identical with the original prototype – and PAM603 – MARE NOSTRUM TITANIUM – 52mm special edition Chronograph consisting of 150 parts. In 1949/50  a new model called LUMINOR was born with the new self-luminor substance called tritium. After the death of Guiseppe Panerai, son of Guido in 1972  the managment of the family business along with military contracts  covered with military secrecy passes to the engineer Dino Zei, who concentrates on the production of  compasses, wrist gauges and underwater torches. First in September 1993 Officine Panerai presents a collection of three series of  limited editions  watches to the public: the Luminor, the Luminor Marina and the Mare Nostrum,  which draw inspiration  from the historical models  created for the Second World war commandos. In 1997 the brand joint the porfolio of the Richemont Group and becomes a major player in the fine watchmaking  market.  In 2002  Panerai opens its manufacture in Neuchatel, Switzerland and its first boutique in Hongkong.   In the meantime there are  about 50 PANERAI boutiques worldwide. In 2005 the first in-house movement P.2002 has been launched, follwed by calibre P.2003, 2004 and P2005 in 2007.  Calibre P.9000 and P2006 were presented year later. The Luminor  Submersible 1950 3 days automatic BRONZO watch introduced in 2011 together  with the launch  of the calibre P.3000 followed by calibres  P.9001 and P.5000 in 2013.
